Youth tennis tournament opens at Obuasi

Obuasi, May 12, GNA - Forty boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 15 drawn from AngloGold Ashanti and the Obuasi Sports Club Tennis Clubs are participating in a special youth tennis tournament at Obuasi. The three-day tournament organized by the Obuasi Office of the National Sports Council (NSC) and Obuasi Golden Tennis Training Centre has Atlas Copco and NBC, all subsidiary mining companies as the sponsors.

The Under-12s and Under-15s are to play only in singles games. Ernest Amoako-Opoku, Coach of the Golden Tennis Training Centre told the GNA Sports at the AGA Junior Club House' tennis court at Obuasi-Wawase that the competition had been christened; "Ghana @ 50 Tournament".

He said apart from using the competition to encourage the youth and rekindle their interest in the game of tennis, it is also aimed aimed at getting the youth involved in the celebrations of Ghana @ 50. Amoako-Opoku said the tournament would also be used in selecting the core group of the youth team for national or regional tennis competitions.

The Obuasi Sports Development Officer, Madam Grace Assiam said the competition was a positive response to her vision and commitment to ensure to the development of the lesser-known sports in the area. She said she was also happy that boxing was being revived in the municipality and was hopeful that well-meaning citizens, especially those with the love for sports would come to her aid in developing various sporting disciplines.

Madam Assiam said that it is her aim to encourage youth participation in all sporitn disciplines, adding that "We want to use the medium of sports to instill the spirit of discipline and respect for authority among the youth at all times." 12 May 07
