Accra, Nov. 7, GNA - Ghanaian youth have been urged not to despise sporting activities but they should instead, take keen interest in them because they could have a bright future through sports. Mrs. Esi Mensa-Bonsu, Headmistress of the University of Ghana Primary and Junior Secondary Schools gave the advice at the just ended inter-sectional athletics competitions of the schools at Legon on Thursday.
She said there are better opportunities for students with athletics background at the University of Ghana as it has instituted special scholarship schemes for such students.
"Athletes on campus do not struggle for accommodation like others students do as they are given automatic residential status on admission," she said.
The headmistress said apart from this, sports in its general terms refreshes the body as well as the mind thereby paving the way for achieving higher and sound academic laurels.
Mrs. Evelyn Emefa Lartey, a teacher and one of the organizer of the games told the GNA Sports that the event was instituted in the 1970s and has since been held annually.
She said the various sections; Blue, Green, Red and Yellow teams compete in high jump, long jump, tug of war, long jump, skipping and running among others.
Mrs. Lartey said the main idea for organizing the games is to whip up healthy competition among the students while unearthing the hidden talents among them.
