Zimbabwean couple wins S. Africa golf competition

Accra, April 30, GNA - Dr Machi Mapuranga, Zimbabwean High Commissioner to Ghana and his wife Shuppi combined beautifully to win a special golf competition at the Tema Country Golf Course to mark the 11th Independence Anniversary Celebration of South Africa and also to raise money for the Nsawum bakers.

The Zimbabwean couple, playing with an average handicap of 20, displayed a perfect understanding between them to record a net score of 55 in the American scrabble system, which allowed men to wear skirt (quilt).

They were presented with two trophies and some cartons of drinks. The pair of Kweku Okyere and Ansah A. had a net score of 57 to place second while Gavin Brown and Jan Brown recorded 58 net to come third in the competition participated by more than 40 golfers across the country.

The one-day 18-hole full handicap event was put together by the Association of South African Businesses in Ghana and facilitated by the South African High Commission.

The golf competition is one of several activities earmarked by the association including a dinner dance slated for September, this year, to raise 65,000 US dollars to purchase modern oven and mixers for the Nsawum bakers.

Officials told the GNA sports, it was a way of putting back into society whatever profits the businessmen might have made in the country. Ace ladies golfer Mona Captan of the Achimota Golf Club, won the "closest to the pin (hole 13)" award and took home a trophy and a DSTV decoder while Captain Toney Ashiagbor of the Bok Nam Kim Club won the "longest drive (hole 1)" award.
