Emir of Kano was dethroned because he asked women to retaliate when slapped by husbands - Islamic prof

Muhammadu Sanusi II and Professor Umar Labdo. Muhammadu Sanusi II and Professor Umar Labdo.

Umar Labdo, a professor of Islamic Political Thoughts at Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano, has said that Muhammadu Sanusi II brought his dethronement upon himself.

Sanusi was dethroned by the Kano State Government on Monday and exiled to Nasarawa State after Aminu Ado Bayero was announced as the new Emir of Kano.

According to Labdo, Sanusi brought the situation upon himself because he got involved too much in politics and in the 2019 general elections against the customs of the emirate.

Labdo said: “It is unfortunate that the emirate is being played with by politicians, but Sanusi invited this to himself. He is too vocal against the custom. Traditional rulers have ways of contributing to governance not publicly."

He also spoke against some of the western things Sanusi introduced into their culture.

He said: “He is pro-women against men. He told women to retaliate if their husbands slapped them. This is against our culture in Africa. He is too blunt; he talks without considering the feelings of his people."
