Former President Jakaya Kikwete has warned youth of careless sex as he flagged off Mount Kilimanjaro climbers in a campaign to raise funds for fighting HIV.
Dubbed GGML Kili Challenge, the campaign is spearheaded by Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) in collaboration with the Tanzania Commission for AIDS (TACAIDS) in 2002, to raise funds to support the AIDS Trust Fund.
Speaking at a flag off event for 35 mountain climbers and 26 cyclists who will climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for the campaign, Mr Kikwete called on young people to be cautious about the unprotected sex.
"If you plan a day and time to meet, don't forget protection. Let your partner know that you will bring it or take your own. Let's not forget to remind each other," he said.
The event took place at the Machame Gate in Hai district, Kilimanjaro region, where the climbers will ascend and return on July 20th this year.
He also commended GGML for showing the way in the fight against HIV.
He also commended the government for continuing to support the fight against HIV/AIDS and increasing the budget, but emphasized that the funds are not enough, so it is important for various stakeholders to support the ongoing campaign.
"I encourage and wish the climbers good luck, as they have made the courageous decision to sacrifice themselves for others," he said.
The CEO of GGML Terry Strong thanked the government for their support in the campaign.
Jerome Kamwela, the Acting Director of TACAIDS, said they will continue to collaborate with GGML to ensure that the goal of zero new infections, zero stigma, and zero AIDS-related deaths is achieved by 2030.
