Mining mogul and owner of Mamelodi Sundowns, Patrice Motsepe has received massive support to contest for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) presidency in the upcoming elections.

According to City Press, a source at CAF has informed the outlet of the backing from COSAFA and CECAFA for the South African club financier to rival Ahmad Ahmad for the top position.

It is understood that the South Africa Football Association (SAFA) is one of the Cosafa affiliates that is behind Patrice Motsepe to contest the CAF elections.

“Four countries from Cosafa have already sent letters of support for Patrice’s candidacy,” the source told City Press.

Meanwhile, Safa has noted that there will be a press conference in the coming days to explain why they are backing the Mamelodi Sundowns bankroller.

“We will call a press conference in the next few days to give the rationale behind our move. But we are excited about this nomination,” Safa chief executive Tebogo Motlanthe told City Press.

According to another source, several West and eastern Africa countries are also in support of Patrice Motsepe and will back him to contest the CAF presidency.

“We know of other countries from west and eastern Africa which have already said they will back him. It will be good for the country to have Patrice at the helm of African football. His track record speaks volumes and he might change the image of CAF,” the source added.
