The Anambra State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has denied a report that gunmen attacked its personnel at a checkpoint in the Ihiala Local Government Area of the state.

There were reports that some gunmen attacked officers of the state command in the Ihiala-Uli axis area of the state, killing an undisclosed number of persons and injuring others.

It was also reported that the attack forced motorists and commuters to run for dear lives as the gunmen shot indiscriminately to scare people away. Similarly, security operatives in the area reportedly removed their uniforms and fled to nearby bushes and houses, abandoning their duty posts.

Reacting to the report, the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement debunked the report, describing it as mischief.

Ikenga urged the general public to disregard the information, saying, “The Command wishes to let the members of the public know, that there is no such incident of any attack on police checkpoints in Anambra state.

“Please kindly disregard it, it is an act of mischief makers who want to incite tension in the state.

“The Police shall continue to provide security and enhance peace in the state.”
