Nigerian NYSC officials demand bribe from corpers before processing payment

The 2020 batch of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who served in Delta State have accused officials of the government institution in the state of demanding bribes before their monthly funds are processed.

The corpers said the phenomenon was started by other colleagues who gave financial incentives to officials to speed up the cash recovery process.

Up until the interview, the corpers who spoke exclusively to MyNigeria on Monday, April 19, 2021, said the Delta state government owe them amounts ranging between N5,000 to N60,000.

"I heard that they will call them from the government house, then they will bribe those officials in charge, after bribing them, they will now help them with their payment, and they will now instruct them not to tell anyone about it," one of the former corpers revealed.

According to the ex-corper, he did not toe the same lane as his colleague as he believed that it is not the right way to get their pay in a country with a good system.

"One of my colleagues told me to come back to delta state, to come and do the same thing, by telling them the certain amount we will give them.

"Before they pay us, we will pay them, and they will now process it. And I don’t think it has to be that way. Because this money has been paid, but those in charge are refusing to release it," he said.

Another ex-corper, Oluwasegun added they have used all their strength and resources to serve the nation, but they have not been duly rewarded.

"Let's say the experience was fair enough. But concerning the state allowance, I’m sure others would have told you that we had to travel from where we were, back to camp just to get our biometric and all other stuff.

"And even when we got to camp, we have to stay the first time, you know how Nigeria is, you have to queue for everything. Most of us actually wasted our time, our money, our energy and still not get the results," he stated.

They are not the first batch of NYSC members who have had their allowances delayed or not paid at all, as the same sentiments were shared by other former NYSC members in the state back in 2013.
