Nigeria's President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has carried out a significant reshuffle by dismissing the country's security chiefs and the head of police.

The defence chief, as well as the heads of the army, navy, and air force, have all been retired and replaced with new officers.

In an official statement, Mr Tinubu announced the immediate retirement of all service chiefs, the inspector-general of police, advisers, and the comptroller-general of customs.

Mr Tinubu has also dissolved the boards of all federal government institutions, with the exception of certain bodies such as the judicial council, the electoral body, and the police service commission.

These changes in the security sector follow a meeting held two weeks ago between the President and the security chiefs, during which he directed them to collaborate in addressing the challenges posed by terrorism, insurgency, banditry, oil theft, and piracy.

Nigeria has been facing a growing wave of attacks attributed to jihadist groups and other criminal organizations, including bandits who primarily engage in kidnapping for ransom.

There has been persistent public demand for a change in the security leadership during the previous government, as they were deemed ineffective in dealing with the situation.
