The Sudanese army has intensified air strikes in capital city Khartoum despite Saudi and US-brokered talks aimed at halting the current fighting.

The lack of progress at the talks in the Saudi city of Jeddah dashed hopes for resolution of the conflict between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

Ahmed Abdallah, a resident of Omdurman, a city that adjoins Khartoum, told the Reuters news agency the army was "firing artillery aggressively, and it often lands in civilian homes".

Talks in Jeddah were first suspended in June and resumed in October. Citing Sudanese sources present at the meetings, Reuters said the talks were adjourned this week with no new agreement.

The months-long war has displaced more than 6.5 million people, devastated the economy and triggered ethnically-driven massacres in Darfur.
