Suspected militants have killed dozens in the latest attack in Burkina Faso’s restive northern region where jihadists have been carrying out frequent attacks, local media have reported.

The attack in Silgadji village, Tongomael municipality in Soum province, took place on Saturday, but reports of the assault only emerged on Monday.

“According to the sources, the assailants stormed the village market where they killed about 50 people. By the time we went to press, Tongomael Municipality remained cut off from communication network as the assailants had destroyed the infrastructure before committing the crime,” the infowakat.net website reported.

State broadcaster Radio-Television du Burkina (RTB) reported on Monday that "dozens were killed" in the attack and gave no further details.

Militants frequently carry out attacks in Soum province in the Sahel Region and in the neighbouring centre-north region.

At least 36 people were killed in an attack on two villages on 20 January in Sanmatenga province.
