The only five Africans who attended 2022 G20 summit and why

The G20 is an intergovernmental forum that connects the world's major economies, the official website of the bloc states.

G20 members spans all continents across the world with Africa and Oceania having just a single country represented.

Africa's representative being South Africa and Australia in the the case of Oceania.

At the recent G20 summit that took place in Indonesia - between 15 - 16 November, 2022; South Africa was duly represented by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

But he was not the only African leader to join the summit. GhanaWeb looks at other Africans who attended and in what capacities.

a. Macky Sall, Senegal president in his capacity as Chairman of the African Union

b. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus (Ethiopian) in his capacity as Director General of the World Health Organization, WHO

c. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala (Nigerian), in her capacity as Director General of the World Trade Organization, WTO

d. Paul Kagame, Rwandan president in his capacity as Chair of NEPAD Heads of State and Government Orientation Committee.

NEPAD is the New Economic Partnership for Africa Development.

Who are the G20 members?

They include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Republic of Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States and the European Union.

Spain is also invited as a permanent guest.
