Traffic Police officers have been warned and tasked to be on the lookout for looters who target accident victims, especially on the Kampala-Masaka Highway.

The thieves target accident victims’ property and routinely never rescue them from the wreckage.

The warning is contained in a report about a traffic accident (referenced Tar 51/2021) that occurred in the wee hours of Thursday morning at Matanga along Kampala-Masaka Highway.

According to the report, the driver of motor vehicle registration number UBG 011E failed to negotiate a corner and rammed into guard rails, and overturned. The truck was loaded with matooke.

The truck driver, whose identity had not been confirmed by press time, died on the spot and the turn boy is nursing critical injuries.

“The incident happened in the middle of the night and it took long for traffic officers to notice. The locals took advantage and looted almost everything in the motor vehicle,” said the report.

The vehicle has since been towed to Masaka Central Police Station pending inspection by the Inspectorate of Vehicles.

The body of the deceased was been taken to Masaka Regional Hospital for a postmortem.
