It's been over a week since the 11th edition of the Ghana Music Awards was ended, but little has been said about the Emceeing aspect of the event.
The issue of Charter House struggling to get an appropriate MC to anchor the most-talked about entertainment show in Ghana was raised by peacefmonline a few days to the event.
Even though the organisers said there were quite a number of people available to MC the show perfectly, lack of a good MC for the programme manifested during the main event held at the Dome (Accra International Conference Center), last Saturday, April 10, 2010.
Chris Attoh of X-FM and Doreen Andoh of JoyFM did not quite glitter as expected. Smooth tongued Chris Attoh did better on the night. All his costumes including the African wear which was ordered from Nigeria made him look smart on stage. Although he was in control, he did not exude the required excitement. His charm over the ladies was obvious and no doubt, he was at ease in a hall brimming with pretty ladies.
He was his usual self, nothing different.
The only thing memorable about Chris Attoh on the night was how he appeared on the yellow carpet on a sleek motor bike with two others, where he was dressed up with a makeup artiste in tow, which was beamed live in the auditorium.
One would have wished he had rather appeared live on stage with the three motor bikes and everything else, instead of what transpired on the yellow carpet, outside the auditorium. That notwithstanding, Chris "flowed" till the end of the programme.
Doreen Andoh
Doreen with Chris on stage on the night Doreen Andoh on the other hand, was not her usual self on the night. Some of her costume did not fit her well. This year’s GMA was one of few events, if not the first time, that Doreen publicly showed off her beautiful legs on stage. This elicited a few catcalls from some of the men anytime she came on stage.
Her presence was barely felt. She looked tensed anytime she appeared on stage and acted as if she was not ready. She did very little to excite the crowd. The only colour she did add to the show had to with the fact she was a female. She did not flow like the Doreen Andoh we know.
Chris and Doreen have both achieved a lot individually on radio and TV and for handling several high profile events over years, therefore one would have expected them to do better than they did.
They are both great MCs but they could have done better.
In the eleven years history of the Ghana Music Awards, Kwami Sefa Kayi had been the MC for a period spanning eight years. In 2008, when he was dropped for Samini and Doreen Andoh, she did better than she did this year. In 2009 Samini, Dentaa and Obour did their best as MCs but it was not good enough - Chris Attoh and Doreen Andoh couldn’t do the magic this year either.
It is obvious Kwami Sefa Kayi has raised the standard of Emceeing on GMA to a level, and it seems that it is now becoming very difficult for anybody to measure up.
In all, the best MC on the night of Ghana Music Awards 2010, was his blackness, DJ Black (Mr. Tumtum) of Joy FM. He knew when to play what and what to say when.
Let’s see who gets to Emcee GMA next year.
