IWAN performs at ‘World Toilet Cup’ to promote good hygiene

Conscious musician, IWAN, who recently signed on as a Champion for WASH, last Wednesday joined a team of youth at the Kawukudi Park near the Kanda Highway to promote WASH United’s ‘World Toilet Cup’ event.

The event, activated just before the Ghana/Germany WORLD CUP match saw a group of six local neighborhood teams vying to score the most goals in a goal target wall with Babylon FC and ‘Ogboo Asala’ FC emerging tops. A fun games to highlight the vision of WASH United, they each received a hamper of a football and a set of branded vest jerseys.

WASH United is a social club based on the common vision of safe drinking WAter, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) for all, with every man, woman and child enjoying their human right to water and sanitation.

Taking advantage of the burgeoning football fever sweeping across the African continent leading up to, and during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, it is using football as a tool and engaging African and international football stars as champions to promote the WASH ideals of safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene for all in Sub- Saharan Africa by

• tackling taboos surrounding sanitation and help create demand for sanitation;

• promoting hand washing with soap;

• advocating for political decision-makers in Africa and in the North to promote the

right to water and sanitation;

• sensitising people that access to safe drinking water and sanitation is a

human right, not charity.

IWAN, who performed a couple of his popular songs, demonstrated his commitment to the campaign he has chosen to support by literally assisting the leaders of the winning teams to wash their hands with soap as an illustration to youth present to remember to wash their soiled hands with soap.

The activation ended just before the commencement of the Ghana/Germany game, which was being shown on a large digital screen on the park for the community courtesy of AngloGold Ashanti, whose head offices are located within the vicinity.

The WASH United campaign will continue to hone in its messages through its ‘WASH in Schools’ programme that is currently on-going.
