Kaakie: Fresh Female Afro-Dancehall Artiste From Ghana

A budding female dancehall musician, Grace Kaakie Ocansey, simply known as ‘Kaakie’, held music fans at the Mavado concert spellbound on Saturday.

Kaakie, before the show, was seen by many as a past contestant of a music reality show who was trying hard to make an impact on the Ghanaian music industry. But to most of the fans who saw her perform at the Movado concert, she is a talented artiste who can thrill the world and truly make an impact.

Kaakie didn’t really receive the same reception the established musicians received when she was announced by Joy FM’s Bola Ray but she did get one of the loudest applause of the night after she performed.

She made an entry with the instrumental version of Jamaican Dancehall artiste’s ‘Hold Yuh’ which she did a freestyle with, then followed it up with her yet-to-be-released single ‘Rizzla (Burning)’. She then moved on to ‘Ewo’ and ‘Too Much’ which got the crowd into a frenzy, with most of them singing along as she performed it.

Apparently, ‘Too Much’, her second professional single released a few weeks ago, has been receiving considerable airplay on radio and so the crowd knew it very well.

The crowd couldn’t help but ask for more when she finished performing, compelling her and DJ Vision, her DJ, to stay and perform ‘Too Much’ one more time before she exited, leaving her taste in the mouth of a lot of the t audience who kept saying positive things about her. The only truly female dancehall artiste in the industry now, Kaakie made her entry into music through Charterhouse’s reality TV show, ‘Stars of the Future’.

Even though she did not win, she was not discouraged as she is now recording and writing songs that will help her achieve her dreams. Kaakie, a few months ago, signed a hefty recording deal with Xtra Large Music, a Ghana-American record label owned by one of Ghana’s finest producers, Jam Master Jay, popularly known as ‘JMJ Baby’, and music and talent development guru, Royce Greene, who is also the general manager of XL Music.

Kaakie released her debut single ‘Ewo’ which saw big names like Samini, Sonni Balli, StoneBwoy all doing their versions of it. ‘Too Much’, her second official single, was released a few weeks ago and is already receiving massive airplay. She is gearing up to release ‘Rizzla (Burning)’, her third official single, later this month.
