Wanlov de Kubolor, Ghana’s latest sensational music prodigy says he is a citizen of the world.
The Romanian born Ghanaian whose name Kubolor means vagabond in Ga says having been born and raised in Romania gives him a broader perspective of the world making him a world citizen. Watch video: Konkonsa by Wanlov
The musician whose style of music and choice of clothing are strikingly outstanding was speaking on BBC Network Africa Thursday September 18, 2008. Wanlov who wears dreadlocks and a skirt walks bare footed. He sings in Pidgin English and local Ghanaian languages.
Wanlov was born to a Ghanaian father and a Romanian mother. He told the BBC that his father went to Romania to study and he met and married his mother. He said the family moved to settle in Ghana in 1984.
Asked what kind of music had influenced his style of music, he said, “I grew up listening to Gypsy and classical music in Romania and then Hi-life music in Ghana.”
Wanlov is in the UK to promote his latest album “Green Card.” He said the inspiration behind this album was the pressure his friends put on him to marry an American girl so he could get a Green Card to stay in the US.
Wanlov’s very unique form of music is fast catching on in Ghana and his recent trip to the UK is part of his strategy to take on the world.
One of the songs on his first album ‘Konkonsa’ meaning gossip in Akan is the favourite of many of his fans.
