Puyaka One of the songs that has been hitting the Kumasi airwaves and gradually getting to Accra and other places is Ahomatrofoo. The singer Puyaka plays on the word, which is the corrupted name for telephone in Akan.
The words in the song talks about a woman who is speaking on the phone with her lover about how he does not call her and he does not receive her calls either. It was on that note note that the sojourner goes to mention a litany of problems that he was facing where he was hence his inability to get in touch or return home.
Apparently the woman thinks that her ?darling? has got another woman where he is and so suggests that if he does not love her anymore he should tell her. He then tries to give some explanation but it is not clear if she is convinced or still had ill feelings about his reticence.
The music is no doubt a complete replica of Ja Rule and Ashanti?s Always on Time with the only differences being the Akan language used in singing and a rap that is added to make it sound more hiplife.
The eight track cassette album has another song on it titled Puyaka, this is one track that goes to talk about the singer: Who he is and what he stands for. It is a song that is replete with bragging lyrics.
Most hiplife artistes do sing about themselves occasionally and therefore Puyaka cannot be faulted on that score. However, he could have done better with the beat by making it a bit more enjoying for as it is now, it does not create any avenue for the listener to enjoy the music very well.
Known in real life as Francis Kwabena Oteng, the United States based singer is a well known dancer. He represented the Ashanti Region at the 1998 National Dance Champion thus with the release of his maiden album Puyaka has followed in the strides of the likes of Slim Busterr, Sony Achiba, among others.
The producer of the album Fuseini Gargo a.k.a Tony Danger says the United States based Puyaka is out to cause danger on the local music scene with this album adding that all must watch out for him. Me Ye Bomb, Yen Ko Party, Mebegyiga, Odo N?hia, Abrabo and Oko are the other tracks on the album.
However, listening to the tape one cannot really say that Ahomatrofoo has what it takes to cause any major havoc on the local music scene. Puyaka?s desire to go into singing is laudable and must be encouraged but he could do better than what he has on his debut album.
The album which has Puyaka himself as the Executive Producer is being distributed by Kumasi Market Co. Ltd in both Accra and Kumasi.
