Tony Akoto's 'Nyame Ye'

Although the Western Region cannot boast of too many gospel artistes, the few who have come from there like Pastor Joe Beecham and Amy Newman have made good the saying that the best indeed comes from the West.

Another westerner who is also seeking to prove that saying right is 32-year-old Tony Akoto, out with his debut album, Nyame Ye.

Tony who is based in Prestea is not only out to prove a point but also to educate and inspire people about Christ, and of course to make an impact on the scene.

The album is one of thankfulness and praise to God for all that he has done for him and one cannot help but be influenced to also sing praises to God.

A plus for Tony are the beautiful and well-arranged choruses which will compel every listener to sing or hum along if he or she does not know the words.

Having featured on a number of gospel shows, he has managed to make his audiences come to appreciate his performances, his passion for singing and his evident commitment for his work.

Songs like Israel Nyame, Nyame Ye, Nyame N?adom and Thank You Jesus are bound to the be favourites of listeners.

Israel Nyame, the first track is in the mid tempo vein and has good sound arrangement. A praise song, it is enhanced by Tony?s lyrics some of which is taken from the popular Bible Chapter, Psalm 23.

He asks God what he can give to him for all the blessings he has bestowed upon him and delivering him from the clutches of the enemy.

Nyame Ye, the title track is also in the mid tempo vein and is another praise song. He tells God to let him testify about all the good things he has done for him. ?I was an outcast, a nobody, who was not fit to be in public but you have changed all that and made me somebody?, he sings.

Nyame N?adom is an acknowledgement of God?s saving grace. The traditional rhythm it utilises contributes in making the song more enjoyable.

With a well done chorus, it talks about God?s love for him and his influence in his life. ?Who was I? A sinner and a promiscuous person. If it hadn?t been for God?s grace I would have been lost and dead by now. He has completely forgiven me? goes the song.

Thank You Jesus gives one an indication of where Tony is going. In a duet form with a sweet voiced lady, their voices bring to bear on the song and enhances it greatly, giving Tony a chance to showcase his great vocal ability.

They are thanking the Lord for his faithfulness and his love. ?You?ve been to me like a father and son, you?ve been with me like a shepherd and his sheep. Shepherd of my soul, I give you glory, shepherd of my soul, I give you praise?.

Other impressive songs include Bisa, Ose Ayeyie, Ewurade Betum and a great instrumental version of Israel Nyame. All songs were composed by Tony Akoto.
