Ghana’s weightlifting contingent leaves for Morocco today

Ghana’s contingent for this year’s African Weightlifting Championship is expected to depart Accra today for Morocco, where the championship will be held.

Eight weightlifters will represent Ghana at the championship, scheduled to begin on Monday, October 28 and end on Tuesday, November 5, 2013. The athletes have been in camp since August and they promise bringing honours to Ghana.

Alberta Ampomah, who broke the national record at the London 2012 Olympics, is expected to return with a medal.

Minister of Youth and Sports Elvis Afriyie Ankrah visited them last week promising government’s support, noting that since Majeti Fteri’s exploits at the Commonwealth Games in 2006 attention has shifted onto weightlifting as a discipline with prospects.
