GBA/CSA to hunt for boxing talents

Accra, June 18, GNA - The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has in conjunction with the Commonwealth Sports Awards initiated a new boxing project dubbed "African Prospects" designed to unearth boxing talents and potential champions for Ghana and Africa. The project, which will also receive backing from Gateway Broadcasting Services (GBS) and Sikaprix Boxing Promotions will commence on July, 28, at the Lebanon House in Accra.

Al Hamilton, Chairman of the Commonwealth Sports Awards, one of the major partners in the project told GNA Sports in an interview from his London base that, the project which is at the pilot stage will seek to identify boxing talents, who have the qualities of world champions. He said the identified boxers will be groomed and provided with the necessary support to storm the world stage.

Al Hamilton stated that five high profile bouts made up of two Africa Boxing Union (ABU) championship fights and International Boxing Federation (IBF) Inter-Continental titles will be on sale for boxing fans.

He however said names of the boxers on the bill will not be disclosed now since negotiations are still ongoing. According to Al Hamilton, plans are in place to extend the projects to other African countries such as Uganda, Kenya and others on the continent. Al Hamilton said the extension of the programme to other African countries will however depend largely on the success of the maiden edition in Accra. 18 June 08
