I’m not Afraid of Banku – Ayittey Powers

Korle-Gonor-based boxer Ayittey Powers has dispelled rumors that he chickened out on his April 18 bout with Bukom Banku.

The two Cruiserweight boxers were scheduled for an expectedly titanic clash at the Accra Stadium on April 18, but Powers pulled out, citing divine reasons.

Fans interpreted his retreat as being out of fear that he would be humiliated by his outspoken Bukom-based opponent.

Powers, however, explained to the media at a press conference yesterday that he pulled out because he wanted to obey divine instructions from his spiritual father, TB Joshua.

“I am a Christian, and when my spiritual father TB Joshua asked me not to fight on that day I had no option but to adhere to his words.

“Me, I am not afraid of Banku, I have never been afraid of him and will not be afraid of him any day. I have never been afraid of any boxer, like I wouldn’t fight boxers like Joshua Clottey.

“I am ever ready for Banku now, we have signed a contract and I will be available on the ‘D’ day. Banku’s words- calling for peace among our followers – have made me sober. On that, victory could go either way, if it comes my way, he will respect it and if it goes his way, I will accord him that respect,” Powers added.

However, the press conference was preceded by the two boxers’ usual trade of insults with Powers dominating as a result of his large entourage.

May 16 has been agreed on as the new date for the bout at the Accra Stadium.
