Lartey emerges GAABA's best

Accra, Dec 27, GNA - Fit Square Gym's flyweight prodigy, Jesse Lartey was named the best boxer of the season by the Greater Accra Amateur Boxing Association (GAABA) at its Awards Night held last Friday at the Prisons Canteen, Cantonments.

Lartey, 15, and a pupil of Apenkwa Presbyterian Junior High School beat Raphael Mensah of Wisdom Gym and Michael "Bullet" Ansah of Square Deal Gym to grab the topmost honour.

The ceremony organized by the Association to honour boxers who excelled during the third edition of the Amateur Boxing League also saw Fit Squares' Gym Emmanuel Quartey and Duke Micah crowned Most Promising Star and Special Talent Awards respectively. Ben Lamptey of Will Power Gym was honoured with the Dedicated Boxer of the Year award, Bright Ayala of Wisdom Gym as the Discovery of the Year and Raymond Commey of Square Deal Gym as the Most Disciplined Boxer.

All the winners were presented with medals, gum shields and Christmas gifts.

The participating Gyms and their coaches were also presented with prizes for their contribution to the success of the league. Gideon Quartey, Acting Chairman of GAABA in his remarks charged the ward winners and other boxers to train harder and maintain their focus for the fourth edition of the League which begins next year. He said his outfit will introduce fresh ideas towards making the league competitive and also appealed to corporate bodies for financial support towards the Association's activities. Ataa Eddie Pappoe, President of African Boxing Union (ABU) Ring Officials lauded the initiative and commended the coaches and boxers for the high level of professionalism exhibited during the league. During a special contest to herald the awards night, Fit Square Gym emerged the dominant force with five of their wards emerging victors. Eric Botchwey and Frederick Lawson defeated Abdul Rahman Omar (Wisdom) and Benjamin Lamptey (Will Power) via unanimous decisions in their light welterweight clashes just as Manyo Plange and Duke Micah replicated a similar feat over Musah Rahman Lawson and Sulemana Tetteh, both of Wisdom Gym in the flyweight division.

Enoch Adjei also accounted for debutant Sammy Goniy of Pakis Gym in their lightweight clash.

In the middleweight category, Wisdom Gym's duo of Jibril Ahmed and Habib Ahmed outclassed Emmanuel Adjei and Saviour Tetteh both of Fit Square Gym via majority decisions. Featherweight Raymond Commey of Square Deal Gym ended the season on a high note with a spectacular performance when he beat Frank Bebu of Fit Square Gym courtesy a majority decision with gym-mate Mathias Sulley also managing a split decision over Bright Ayala of Wisdom Gym in their lightweight clash. 27 Dec. 08
