Mortein boxing concept is yielding benefits- GBA

Accra, Dec 21, GNA - Mr Moses Foh-Amoaning, Chairman of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has said that the Mortein Professional Boxing League concept is yielding benefits as it has created the right avenue for boxers to exploit their talents and generate income.

The GBA Chairman said that through the concept, many graduates from the amateur level have been given fights at regular intervals, which have kept them in good shape whilst some have become national champions. He said boxers in the league have also been provided with regular source of income through consistent promotions as compared to previous times where boxers stayed idle for months before taking up a single fight.

Mr Foh-Amoaning said four graduates of the Mortein boxing are now national champions with over 30 percent of the GBA rankings being occupied by the graduates.

According to Mr Foh-Amoaning, the concept has generated the interest of corporate bodies in boxing and this is expected to enhance their chances of attracting more sponsorship for the GBA.

Mr Foh-Amoaning said this is due to the extensive publicity that the boxing league has provided for the brand name Mortein, adding that other corporate bodies stand the chance of yielding similar benefits if they should decide to invest in the sport.

The concept, which is in its third year will be climaxed on Monday, December 26, at the Frank Ofori Tennis Court of the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium in Accra.

Top on the bill is sensational Yakubu Amidu, a discovery of the Mortein League who will be vying for the newly created West Africa Boxing Union (WABU) Super Featherweight Title belt against Tossavi Louis from Benin while Galley Kudjo, National Bantamweight Champion will be defending his title against Lante Addy, who is the Mortein Boxing League Bantamweight champion.

Other bouts include a ten round contest in the Super Featherweight Division between Sam Amoako and Emmanuel Tagoe with Godwin Cudjoe battling Gabriel Adoko in another ten round Welterweight contest. Ishmael Tetteh will also pitch his strength against Joseph Kwadjo in a Super Welterweight contest.
