Sowah fights McAllister for Commonwealth title

Accra, June 16, GNA - Ghanaian boxer Godfred Sowah will face Scottish Lee McAllister for the vacant Commonwealth Lightweight title on Friday, June 19 in Aberdeen, Scotland.

The bout billed for the Beach Ballroom in Aberdeen has been commissioned by the British Boxing Board of Control and would be promoted by Tommy Gilmour of St. Andrews Sporting Club. The 12 round championship presents a fine opportunity for the Akotoku Boxing Academy product to have a claim at a major world boxing title.

Sowah holds a record of 11 wins from 14 bouts with three losses and faces the highly ranked Scot in his toughest test so far for the vacant title.

The Akotoku product has not fought since defeating Bilal Mohammed at the Plaza Cinema in a Commonwealth eliminator in July 2008, but his Manager Theophilus Addo told GNA Sports in Accra that "Sowah is ready for the bout." "He has been training for a long time and we are sure he will emerge victorious," Addo added.

McAllister nicknamed the "Aberdeen Assassin", boasts of an impressive record of 28 wins from 30 fights with two losses. The 26-year old has fought twice this year, with the recent being a majority points decision win over Abdoulaye Soukouna of France last March, incidentally at the same venue. Sowah has since left for Scotland.
