Ghana overcomes U.K in Azumah Nelson Fight

Ghana unanimously triumphed over their U.K counterparts in the fourth edition of the Azumah Nelson Fight at the Bukom Boxing Arena on Saturday night.

Ghana’s highly rated Wahab Oluwasuen exhibited a stupendous display to knockout John Hicks from the UK in the Super Featherweight contest to set the ball rolling for his other pugilists.

Oluwasuen took control of the bout in the first round with some wild punches on Hicks who appeared very jittery even as he tried to prevent an early knock down at a parked crowd in the arena.

Hicks quickly recovered from his first thumping and took control of the second round with some quick jabs that nearly sent Oluwasuen to his canvas but a quick response in the latter stages of the round proved very vital for the Ghanaian to square the round.

Beaming with confidence after the second round scare, Oluwasuen upped his game and dominated the third round. The Ghanaian sent Hicks crashing to the ground with a ferocious straight right hook that caught him off guard. Tried as he could, Hicks failed to respond to the count of Referee Roger Barnor who had no option than to signal for the end of the fight.



In other bouts, Ghana’s Raphael Kwabena King won a split decision against Irish, Anthony Ayinde. The welterweight event which was billed for six rounds saw King score 57-56, 58-56 while Ayinde managed 56-57 from the three judges.

In an all Ghanaian affair, Wassiu Mohammed won the bragging right over Felix Okine who had earlier predicted a knockout to his teeming supporters. Mohammed won the bout courtesy a unanimous decision (60-34, 60-35, 60-34) in their scheduled super bantamweight contest that also lasted for six rounds.



In the amateur contest, son of Ghanaian boxing legend, Azumah Nelson Jnr., struggled to defeat fellow Ghanaian, Prosper Dzidzor, in a three-round lightweight contest.

Nelson Jnr., who failed to show any sign of his father’s brevity, displayed an underwhelming performance much to the disappointment of the numerous fans who were expecting a display of the ‘Professors’ prowess and boxing skills against Dzidzor.

Azumah Nelson Junior started the bout against Dzidzor on a very bright note

landing some heavy punches and showed outstanding defensive artistry which was greeted with applause by the crowd but his performance dropped in the second and third round. Dzidzor took over the bout and gave a good account of himself.

He went hard at the legend’s son who seemed to have no antidote to the relentless punches. Dzidzor went all out and one occasion knocked him down but after the three rounds of boxing, the judges scored the bout 2-1 in favor of Azumah Nelson Junior.
