Ghanaian energy company Springfield E&P has said that the completion of its appraisal well test at the Afina discovery, located within the West Cape Three Points Block 2 in Ghana, indicates potential production rates of up to 12,000 barrels per day (bpd).

The appraisal of the well, conducted via re-entry, reached a depth of 4,085 meters, encountering light oil with a gross thickness of 65 meters.

Chief Executive Officer of Springfield, Kevin Okyere, speaking with energycapitalpower.com, mentioned that the test, known as the Afrina-1X Drill Stem Test, achieved a maximum rate of approximately 4,500 bpd, confirming substantial reservoir productivity.

He also noted that a secondary target revealed 10 meters of hydrocarbon-bearing sands containing both gas and condensates.

"Afrina-1X is a vertical well, and we are confident that a horizontal well or other completion methods, which maximize reservoir exposure, could significantly increase production rates," he is quoted as saying by energycapitalpower.com.

The West Cape Three Points block is operated by Springfield E&P, with partners including the Ghana National Oil Company (GNPC) and its subsidiary, GNPC Exploration & Production Company.

Background

The appraisal campaign follows a July 2024 ruling by an international arbitration tribunal, which called for further work before the unitization of the Afrina and Sankofa fields due to evidence that both fields belong to the same reservoir.

The arbitration had stalled Springfield’s efforts since 2019 when the company first made the discovery of hydrocarbons after drilling the well.

The unitization directive, issued by the authorities, required Springfield and Italian oil major Eni, operators of the Sankofa field, to work together to optimize production from the shared reservoir.
