Independent Presidential Candidate for the 2024 general elections and leader of the Movement for Change, Mr. Alan Kyerematen, has announced an ambitious plan to rejuvenate Ghana’s textile and garment industry.

He emphasized the sector's potential by highlighting the global garment and textile market, which is valued at an estimated $1.5 trillion.

Mr. Kyerematen pointed out that Ghana holds a comparative advantage in this industry due to the availability of skilled yet relatively inexpensive labour and the potential for producing high-grade cotton, a crucial raw material.

His revitalization strategy is part of the Great Transformation Plan, a blueprint for Ghana’s development themed "Stability, Growth, Resilience, and Prosperity."

Additionally, Mr. Kyerematen noted that Ghana could capitalize on export opportunities through initiatives like the United States Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) and the EU-Ghana Economic Partnership Agreement.

He referenced the success of the Presidential Special Initiative (PSI) on Garments and Textiles, which was introduced under former President J.A. Kufuor’s administration.

The PSI has already generated billions of Ghana Cedis in export revenue and created over 200,000 direct and indirect jobs across the industry’s value chains.

Mr. Kyerematen's plan aims to further expand these achievements, positioning Ghana as a major player in the global textile and garment market.
