Ashanti regional workers call for review of minimum wage

Kumasi, April 16, GNA-The Ashanti Regional and the Kumasi District Councils of Labour have called on the Tripartite Committee to convey an emergency meeting to review the 13,500 cedis minimum wage in view of the current economic hardships facing workers in the country.

According to them, if government would not rescind its decision on the various taxes on the petroleum products, then there was the need for an upward adjustment of the minimum wage to enable workers to cope with the current economic circumstances.

These were contained in a resolution adopted at the end of a joint meeting of the Regional and Kumasi District Councils of Labour in Kumasi on Friday.

The resolution, which was jointly signed by Mr Joe Omane Agyekum, vice-chairman of Ashanti Regional Council of Labour and Mr Thomas T. Kujantira, chairman of the Kumasi District Council of Labour, expressed the support of the members to the stance of the leadership of the TUC's call on the government to cut down on the various taxes on petroleum products.

They also advised the government to widen the tax net and not to over-stretch taxes on petroleum products.

The workers also called on the Presidential Commission established to review the general pension scheme to expedite action and have its report published as soon as practicable.
