Atuabo Gas plant to start flowing LPG soon – Ogbamey

The Atuabo Gas Processing Plant will soon start flowing Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) as part of its ongoing commissioning process, Communication Manager of Ghana National Gas Company (GNGC), Alfred Ogbamey has revealed.

Natural gas started flowing from the Jubilee Fields to the $1-billion plant on November 10, 2014.

The process began with the flow of 16 million standard cubic feet (scf) of gas for pre-commissioning and commissioning.

That followed the successful physical tie-in of the flexible riser of the FPSO Kwame Nkrumah to the onshore gas processing plant.

Ogbamey wrote on his Facebook page that the gas flow from the plant is helping ease the current power crisis in the country.

“Atuabo working and helping to ease energy challenges! It's been providing lean gas for VRA every day since November 24, 2014.

“It started with an average 26 million mmscfd and as of yesterday was way above the Ghana Gas Board projection of 35 mmscfd. It provided 48 mmscfd,” Ogbamey said.

According to him, officials at the state power producer Volta River Authority “are even more excited with the quality of gas they are getting than us at Ghana Gas. And they have become our advocates.”

“We are set to roll out LPG too as part of the ongoing commissioning process. Amazing!” he said.

Gas from the Plant is expected to lessen Ghana’s reliance on the West African Gas Pipeline in Nigeria for gas to power some thermal production units.

The unreliable supply of gas from Nigeria has intermittently plunged Ghana into darkness.
