Ghana’s Auditor General has recommended private sector participation in some aspects of five unprofitable regional airports to maximize returns on these investments.

“Furthermore, the Commercial Service Department of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) should identify potential concessionaires to occupy idle spaces to generate more revenue through rent and royalties,” the Auditor General suggested in the recently published 2023 report.

This recommendation follows a thorough audit of the operations of five regional airports in Ghana, which revealed their lack of commercial viability.

The Kumasi Airport, now Prempeh I International Airport in the Ashanti Region, Tamale Airport, Wa Airport, Sunyani Airport, and Ho Airport were all deemed commercially unviable by the Auditor General.

“We conducted an analysis on the operations of five regional airports in terms of their commercial viability and noted that all five regional airports were not commercially viable,” the report stated.
