Bank of Ghana educates traders on re-denomination

Sunyani, May 10, GNA - The Bank of Ghana, in collaboration with the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) and Space FM, a Sunyani based local radio station, have organized a sensitisation programme on the re-denomination of the cedi for traders at 'Eno Busuma' market popularly known as Wednesday market in Sunyani.

Although the programme was well organized with a well-performed performance by the drama troupe of the Sunyani Centre for National Culture, it failed to attract the needed audience as the targeted traders rather chose to go about their activities.

Most of the traders GNA spoke to said they were not aware of the programme and those who knew of it said they could not leave their numerous customers unattended to or their wares to people they could not trust.

Madam Akua Fosua suggested that they should rather fix public address systems at various vantage points of the market and adverts on it should constantly be played for them to hear adding that the more they heard it the more they would be able to memorize and understand it. The Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Mr. Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, commended the organizers for initiating the idea of educating the traders.

Mr. Kwame Agyenim-Boateng, Sunyani Municipal Director of NCCE, explained to the gathering the various denominations of the Ghana Cedi and its equivalent in the present currency. He told them to be mindful of charlatans who were ready to capitalize on the situation to dupe innocent people and stressed that they should change their old cedis only at banks and loans and credit companies.

Mr. Agyenim-Boateng gave the assurance that mobile banking services would be provided for rural communities where there was no access to banking facilities. 10 May 07
