The Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) has hailed the decision by the government to launch an application for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for customers to buy credit.

The CPA said apart from fighting corruption in the system, the app will also help the ECG generate enough revenue.

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on Tuesday announced at a Town Hall Meeting in Kumasi that government will on February 18, 2020, launch the mobile application to enable customers of the ECG to buy prepaid credit via mobile phones without having to visit sales points.

Reacting to the issue on Onua FM’s Yen Sempa hosted by Bright Akwasi Asempa, the Head of Complaints at the CPA, Benjamin Akoto, said, “[the move] will fight corruption”.

“It is a good thing,” he stressed.

He added that there have been several instances where officers of the ECG have been prevented from collecting ECG bills but this app will eliminate such practice.

“It will prevent the ‘no go area zone’ from not buying electricity.”
