Cape Coast traders to relocate

Traders at the Kotokuraba Market, have been given an ultimatum to move to the temporary structures at the Kotoka market handed over to them on Tuesday, September 30.

This would pave the way for the demolition of the old market on October 1, for the construction of a permanent modern facility.

The temporary market is expected to accommodate more than thousand traders in two separate sites at Kotoka market and the other one located near Ghana Broadcasting Corporation.

Some traders who sell at the mercy of the weather after receiving the keys to the stalls from officials of Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly (CCMA) said they were elated and are ready to move.

The market, which is one of the two most important projects dear to the hearts of the people in the Metropolis, was initiated by the late President Evans Atta Mills.

Conducting Ghana News Agency around the two facilities ahead of the official handing over ceremony, Mr Nicholas Addo, Public Relations Officer of CCMA said the traders were given up to the end of this month to relocate to the new sheds after receiving their keys.

Mr Addo said President John Mahama is expected in the Metropolis by October 6 to officially cut the sod for the construction of the new market which is due to be completed within 18 months.

He said the CCMA could not meet the April, 2014 deadline for the project completion due to some few challenges.

Nana Ama Nsiah, Queenmother for Kotokoraba market lauded Madam Priscilla Arhin, Metropolitan Chief Executive, whom she described as pro-active and hardworking, explaining that it was through her instrumentality that the market project had seen the light of day.
