The Cocoa Farmers Award Winners Association has expressed confidence that President-elect John Dramani Mahama will revive the cocoa sector and improve the livelihoods of cocoa farmers.
The president of the association, Charles Gyamfi, stated in a message that President Mahama’s background as a farmer, coupled with his extensive experience in managing the country, makes him the ideal person to address the challenges facing the sector with policies that will reverse its declining fortunes.
In a statement congratulating the former president and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on their victory in the December 7 elections, Gyamfi noted that cocoa farmers, as well as others in the agricultural sector, were inspired by the NDC’s forward-looking policies and were hopeful that President Mahama and the party would deliver on their promises for the benefit of the sector and the country at large.
"We are particularly encouraged by your commitment to modernizing farming techniques while preserving traditional knowledge," he said.
"Your pledge to strengthen the cocoa pricing mechanism to ensure fair returns for our hardworking farmers is also heartwarming," he added.
"At this crucial time when global cocoa prices are reaching historic highs, we believe your leadership will be instrumental in ensuring that Ghana maximizes these opportunities for the benefit of our farmers," Gyamfi continued.
He further expressed the association's eagerness to collaborate with the incoming government on sustainable farming practices to preserve the country’s cocoa heritage for future generations, while also meeting the growing global demand for environmentally responsible production.
To begin, he said the group was ready to engage with the transition team to share detailed proposals for strengthening Ghana's cocoa sector.
"We are prepared to participate in any agricultural policy discussions as you form your government," Gyamfi said.
He also congratulated President Mahama and the NDC for conducting a peaceful and spirited campaign, which led to their historic win in both the presidential and parliamentary elections.
