Comet destroys expired drinks at Aflao

Aflao, June 11, GNA - Comet Ghana Limited, a duty free shop at Aflao on Friday publicly destroyed about 1,000 units of unwholesome beverages and drinks worth about 6 million cedis. The items, whose expiry dates had lapsed included 264 units of Royal Dutch Beer, 372 units of Capel Multifruta (fruit juice), and 300 units of Sangria Tio De la Bota (paper wine).

Personnel of the Port Health and Customs Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS), which granted the certificate of destruction, supervised the exercise. Mr Seth Asante, Aflao Comet Branch Manager told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the company carried out the destruction of the items voluntarily. He said Comet, which is a subsidiary of Comet International of Spain aims at fulfilling international as well the Ghana Food and Drugs Board (FDB) and the Ghana Standards Board (GSB) requirements.

Mr David Plorke, Senior Environmental Officer of the Port Health said his outfit warned traders to desist from deliberately, stocking their shops with expired goods. He said an officer of the Port Health had seized expired goods being brought into the country across the border from Togo and from markets in the vicinity.

Mr Plorke said, while the Port Health would maintain its vigilance against such goods coming onto the markets, consumers should also be alert and examine goods for their expiry dates before purchasing them.
