Corporate Ghana to support Westgate Mall victims

Corporate institutions and individuals in Ghana at a fundraising event on Friday pledged to provide financial support for the maintenance of victims of the Westgate Mall shooting in Nairobi, Kenya.

e.TV, a private television station in Ghana, through its flagship programme dubbed: “Awake”, hosted by Ms Rashida Nasamu, spearheaded the organisation of the event, being anchored on the theme: “Helping Westgate victims – an e.TV Ghana initiative.”

Star Assurance Company, US Group of Companies and Energy Bank among others as well traditional authorities and chief executive officers promised to donate to the terrorist attack victims as a show of solidarity and love. Dr Affail Monney, President of Ghana Journalists Association and others took turns to speak against terrorism.

Mr Akwasi Agyeman, Managing Director of Global Media Alliance, owners of e.TV Ghana, told Ghana News Agency that the company felt obliged to rally support for brothers and sisters in Kenya.

He said Africa lost its illustrious sons and daughters, including Professor Kofi Awoonor, former Chairman of the Council of State in the incident and that places an obligation on the media outlet to support the victims.

“We hope that as Ghanaians, we can rally support for Kenya as we did for Haiti,” he added. Representatives of the Diplomatic Corps, the East African Community, Government agencies, corporate Ghana, and the media are expected to support the course.

The West Gate Shopping Mall was attacked by al-Shabab, a Somali based terrorists group.
