The Minister-designate for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has assured that his office will ensure that the domestic debt exchange programme (DDEP) that cost Ghanaians their investments does not repeat itself.

According to him, this was an unfortunate occurrence that befell Ghanaians; therefore, he will lead the charge to bring Ghana’s debt to sustainable levels.

He noted that an independent debt management office will be instituted to manage debt levels.

He made the comments when he appeared before the Appointments Committee on January 13, 2025.

“It is sad to note that the country has gone through the domestic debt exchange. It is also sad to note that we had to restructure our Eurobonds. In order not to repeat the past mistakes, we intend to establish an independent debt management office. In the meantime, we have a major issue that we have to deal with.

“For instance, on February 18, about GH¢6.8 billion cedis will be due for payment. It is our responsibility to pay, and the MoF is preparing to pay. I will work with the Ministry of Finance and our development partners. I will do whatever it takes to avoid a second wave of the crisis we faced in 2022,” he noted.
