The Chairman of the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association and President of the Ghana Auto Parts Dealers Association, Henry Okyere Jnr, has asked the general public to disregard any move by some drivers to increase transport fares.

He said the decision to increase the fares based on an increment in the prices of spare parts is misguided and unfounded.

In a statement on March 16, 2025, the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association dismissed claims by the Alliance of Drivers – Ghana, which alleged that the increasing cost of spare parts is a key factor in their planned 20% fare increase, set to take effect on March 17, 2025.

The chairman in a media engagement emphasized that the price of spare parts has not increased.

He also noted that it is unfair to increase fares when the cedi has gained some strength in the foreign exchange market

In a video shared by JoyNews on X, he said “First of all, GPRTU is not aware of what is going on. This group is politically motivated. I spoke to their National PRO, he said they are doing it because they want to be heard. They want the minister to call them. Last year the dollar went to GH¢17, now it is GH¢15.50. The price of spare parts is coming down because the dollar is coming down and the government has not imposed any tax on spare parts or import duty.”

Okyere said the move by the drivers was based on propaganda and an agenda to frustrate the new government.

“How can you tell me that even though there were no taxes imposed on spare parts or import duty in Parliament, the price of spare parts will go up? It’s not true. Their claim is false, propaganda and mischievous. They want to disturb this government because of the goodwill this particular government is enjoying,” he said.

He concluded that “Nobody should listen to them, because they cannot use spare parts as a yardstick to increase transport fares. They shouldn’t pay any new fares because GPRTU is the mother body.”
