The Managing Director of the Greater Accra Private Transport Executive, Charles Abban, has noted that the government's initiative to incorporate electric buses into Ghana's public transport system is a laudable step.

He said steps have been implemented to assign designated lanes to the EV buses.

Abban explained that since the traffic situation is directional, the lanes assigned will be in the opposite direction to deal with the problem.

He added that the government has trained head potters and ladies to drive the buses as part of its inclusion agenda.

The GAPTE Director spoke at the launch of 100 electric buses by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on November 27, 2024.

This transformative initiative, which highlights Ghana's commitment to sustainable development, marks the beginning of a new era in urban mobility, with significant economic, environmental, and social benefits.

The launch, a collaborative effort between Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) and the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE), introduces electric buses as a cost-effective, eco-friendly alternative to conventional transportation.

The project also aligns with Ghana's agenda to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and promote affordable, efficient public transport services for all.

The highlight of this initiative is its potential to reduce transportation costs significantly. Commuters can expect fare reductions of between 40-50%. This is made possible by the lower operational costs of electric buses compared to fossil fuel-powered vehicles.
