Electricity is more expensive than rent – Amon Kotei

A local governance expert, Issaka Amon Kotei, has raised alarms over the escalating cost of electricity, which has now surpassed typical rent prices in Ghana.

In an interview with Kasapa News, Mr. Kotei revealed that while some rental properties charge as little as GHC150 per month, the monthly electricity bill can reach as high as GHC300, highlighting a significant economic strain on households.

Mr. Kotei attributed this troubling trend to the prevailing economic conditions under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, stating that the current financial landscape is forcing citizens to reconsider their budgeting priorities.

“It’s concerning that people are now paying more for electricity than they do for basic housing,” he noted.

With energy costs increasingly jeopardizing financial stability, the future will depend on effective governance and policies that ensure affordability and access to essential services for all citizens.
