Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the new board chair of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has pushed the company’s management to embrace the spirit of innovation and efficiency.

He recommended implementing smart grid technologies in large cities such as Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi.

He stated this during the swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday, July 16, 2024. He said, “Today, we stand at the threshold of a new era of possibility.

"As we embark on this journey with the ECG under my stewardship as Board Chair, we have the chance to transform our company and create a brighter future for our nation.

“As I have earlier intimated, I know that a lot of work has already been done in these areas. But I also know that we have a long way to go. And I want to assure you that under my leadership of the ECG Board, we will deploy our best efforts to improve what we came to meet at ECG."

He continued, “Let us begin by embracing a spirit of innovation and efficiency. We can start by deepening the deployment of smart grid technologies in big cities like Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi. This technology has the power to reduce outage response times, boost businesses, and enhance the quality of life for our citizens.

“We must also prioritize customer service. By developing a more interactive and user-friendly digital platform, we can reduce complaint resolution times and improve overall customer satisfaction. This is not just a matter of convenience; it’s a matter of justice. Every Ghanaian deserves access to reliable and efficient electricity.

“Now, let me turn my attention to infrastructure. By assessing our current distribution networks and reducing technical losses, we can save resources and improve power delivery reliability. This is not just a technical challenge; it’s a moral imperative. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and our future to be responsible stewards of our resources.”
