First African cosmetics exhibition opens in Accra

Shea Network Ghana and the Global Shea Alliance (GSA) on Monday launched an exhibition of shea-based cosmetics in Accra.

A release from the United States (U.S) Embassy in Accra signed by Mrs Joyce Asiedu, Information Officer, and copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said the Deputy Minister of Industries, Mr Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, delivered the keynote address at the event.

Mr Ricketts-Hagan praised both organizations for their commitment to coordinate and develop the shea industry and noted several commitments that the government of Ghana had made to support shea collectors, processors, and entrepreneurs.

According to the release, USAID's West Africa Mission Director, Alex Deprez who also spoke at the event noted, “Shea is a critical industry that touches the lives of millions in rural communities here in Ghana and across Africa. USAID supports the Global Shea Alliance and its partners to hold events like this exhibition that stimulate new ideas, promote the best steps for the shea industry to move forward, and spur economic growth.”

Senyo Kpelly, CEO of award-winning brand TAMA Cosmetics and GSA Executive Committee Member, spoke about the importance of GSA activities.

With over 360 members in 25 different countries, Mr. Kpelly said the GSA “undertakes numerous activities to promote shea as a high quality food and cosmetics ingredient and ensure the sustainability of this resource for generations to come.”

Mr. Kpelly also noted, “As the demand for high-quality products continues to grow in Africa and around the world, many of our members are developing new products and technologies to satisfy this market. And the great thing is that these members are doing this in Africa with African ingredients.”

After the opening ceremony, guests toured the Exhibition and met the African entrepreneurs who were showcasing their innovative products that included traditional black soap and raw shea butter to more modern cosmetics like coconut-mango shampoo and body wash, the release stated.

The event which was supported by USAID, was hosted by Shea Network Ghana, a national nonprofit industry association that seeks to coordinate and strengthen the shea industry in Ghana and promote equal benefits for all stakeholders.
