Lovers of guinea fowl meat will no longer have course to worry following the establishment of a 45,000 capacity ultra-modern factory processing live guinea fowls and other live birds in Ghana.
The facility which is located in the heart of the Tamale Metropolis, is meant to feed into government’s ‘one district, one factory’ initiative which yet to commence.
The facility which is the first of its kind in the Northern Region is also aimed at providing jobs to over 50,000 residents including farmers in guinea fowl rearing directly and indirectly.
According to managers of the facility located at the industrial hub of the Tamale Metropolis, the factory can process a minimum of 1,500 birds every 8 hours and can do more depending on the demand for dressed birds.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Geese Fresh Point Limited Kofi Gyamfi has revealed that the facility will consider producing hygienic birds under a very clean environment.
Giving his rationale for the establishment of the facility, he said “on my return from the US, I paid a visit to a friend in the North and realized that there were a lot of guinea fowls but no ready market. I also observed that residents south of the country were craving for guinea fowl meat but as to how to get it fresh and hygienic was the problem. I therefore decided to set up here and started preparing the guinea fowls on a small scale for sale to customers in Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi and other areas. I think it is now time we extend our tentacles”.
The factory according to him has a rendering plant that coverts the waste of waste of the dressed birds including their feathers, blood and intestines into protein meal for pigs and poultry.
He is optimistic with the state of the art facility equipped with a processing hall for the birds, slaughtering cone, scalding machine that heats water soften the skin of the animals, the defeathering machines, plucking machines, screw chiller that also cools the temperature of the birds and drip drum that takes off water and dries ice on the slaughtered birds, consumers can be assured of hygienic products.
“This facility is also fitted with cutting machine/Portioning machines, Blast freezer that freezes the product within the shortest possible time into average of minus 30 degrees, and then taken into the cold room where the product is packaged and stored for market. There are refrigeration trucks to transport birds under a controlled temperature to the market centres”, he concluded.
