Tensions were high after the Country Manager of Hapag Lloyd Ghana Limited, Robert Oram, refused to receive a petition from members of the Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders (GIFF) in the presence of the media.

Oram had earlier instructed a representative of his outfit to accept the petition on behalf of the company; however, the group refused and insisted on presenting the petition to him.

A few minutes later, he came down to meet the group but refused to engage with them because of the media presence.

In an interview with the media, the President of the Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders (GIFF), Stephen Adjokatcher, said his group was committed to ensuring that business operations at the ports were favorable.

Members of the Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders on Monday, November 4, 2024, hit the streets of Tema to protest against what they say are exploitative practices by shipping lines in the country.

They called on these shipping lines to desist from charging in dollars and to stop charging demurrage incurred on weekends and public holidays.

The protest is also to address a practice in which shipping lines, contrary to the Customs Act of 2015, are engaging in customs brokerage, sidelining freight forwarders, and monopolising services in a manner that the association views as anti-competitive.
