GCB is ready for new currency

Accra, July 3, GNA- Ms. Clara Kwakyibea Bosompem Manageress of the Ghana Commercial Bank Limited GCB (Ministries Branch) on Tuesday said the bank was ready for the circulation of the new currency but was waiting on the instructions of the Information Technology (IT) department for update of the system.

Speaking in an interview with Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Accra, she noted that, customers would not be given old currencies even though the bank had not yet begun circulation of the new currency, adding that, "the bank would not disclose the amount provided for circulation for it was confidential to the bank".

"We received the new currency on Saturday but have given them to the cashers to hold on for the IT department to give the go ahead", she explained.

Ms. Bosompem however said that, the banks would accept old checks for now and also all customers who would come to redraw money would be given the new currency.

The checks which are ready would be given to the customers as the circulation of the new currency begins.

Ms Bosompem said, "The bank had placed front line staff in educating customers on the new currency in case of any difficulty". "As a bank we are expecting that customers would feel comfortable with the new currency and also congestion at the banking hall would be reduced", she said.
