GFGL donates towards UMaT V-Sat project

Tarkwa (W/R), Dec 3, GNA - Gold Fields Ghana Limited (GFGL) has donated A2292 million to the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) at Tarkwa, as its contribution towards the second phase of the V-Sat project for students to access the Internet even in their rooms. Ms Joyce Aryee, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, presenting the cheque said the Chamber had decided to support UMaT because the institution trained core personnel of its members. She noted that many members of the Chamber were supporting various activities in the University and stated that GFGL was supporting the Internet facility and the Geo- Technical Laboratory.

The CEO said the support was necessary, adding that, this was a commitment by the Chamber as part of its corporate social responsibility because its members worked with the University's graduates.

Miss Aryee stated that, "the Chamber believes that people matter more than things but people need things to become the good resources that they are" and said it had contributed A250 million towards the University's Endowment Fund and would do so for the next three years. Hopefully it would be reviewed upward to help in making the University sufficiently funded to turn out quality human resource for the mining industry in Ghana and the world over, she said.

Prof Newton Amegbe, Pro-Vice Chancellor, thanked GFGL for the donation and described the V-Sat project as one of the dearest to the University because Information, Communication and Technology was the order of the day. He said the goal of UMaT was to achieve excellence and there was the need to keep in touch with the outside world.

Prof Amegbe said the project was estimated at US$160 thousand with the second phase aimed at providing the Internet facility at the students' hostel where they could access it in their rooms. "This is the only University in Ghana, which can boast of such facility," he stated
