The Director-General of Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Mr. Richard Anamoo has paid a day working visit to the Pioneer Food Cannery (PFC) Limited, producers of Starkist tuna, other quality tuna products as well as fishmeal products at Tema.
The Director-General was accompanied by Mr. Kingsford Nii Otoo, the fishing Harbour General Manager. His visit was to familiarize with the operations of PFC, have knowledge in its projections into the future, challenges the company was facing and how best GPHA can assist.
The GPHA team toured the fish receipts platform, the newly setup Fishmeal Plant-where the fish waste are covered into meal for Ghana’s livestock and poultry industry, the Oil Extraction unit-where Omega 3 is extracted from the eyes of the tuna fish, the Warehouse section and the Waste Water Treatment Plant site, currently under construction.
Mr. Ananoo was highly impressed with the working conditions of factory and commended management for the large work force especially the women quota and their diligence to work.
The GPHA team was informed that PFC’s current volume of operations of 47% i.e. 50,000 tonnes of raw tuna fish per year would be raised to 53% by 2015 at 55,000 tonnes and thereby create additional 400-500 jobs in Tema, Ghana.
Mr. Nichol Elizabeth, the General Manager of PFC thanked the GPHA Director General and the fishing Harbour General Manager for their interest and continued support enjoyed so far and pledged to uphold the company’s ethics and values to drive their current expansion programmes.
