The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), together with other key stakeholders of the maritime sector, were duly represented in the 2024 May Day celebration.

The program, themed "Election 2024; The Role of Workers and Social Partners in Securing Peaceful Elections for National Development," was held at the Independence Square in Accra to acknowledge the roles and contributions of workers in nation-building.

The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Meridian Ports Services, Ghana Shippers Authority, Ghana Standards Authority, Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders, Fisheries Commission, and other agencies representing the maritime and dock workers sector participated in the parade along with other agencies in the celebration.

The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, lauded the various institutions and organizations for their tremendous hard work and contributions in their respective sectors that have contributed to the development of the country.

“I must, at the outset, express the heartfelt appreciation of the Ghanaian people and their government to the hardworking men and women across all sectors whose dedication and commitment drive our economy forward. That is why we celebrate you on May Day,” he said.

He disclosed that the government is in the process of enacting a new comprehensive and contemporary labour law that protects the interests of all actors in the labour force in the country by the end of the year.

“Organized labour has shared the burden of government and made sacrifices that ensure recovery and stability. The least I can do for the over 11.5 million people in the labour force and the next generation is to enact a new Labor Act that is comprehensive and contemporary and protects the interests of all actors in the world of work,” he assured.

The Secretary-General of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) Ghana, Dr. Yaw Baah, in his remarks, stressed the need for workers to work hand in hand to promote peace in the country.

“Each and every Ghanaian must do whatever he or she can so that together we can achieve peaceful elections in December this year,” he admonished.

Meanwhile, in Takoradi, workers of the Port of Takoradi joined their colleagues and other institutions to partake in the May Day Parade at the Ghana Secondary Technical School Park.

The Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, commended the labour force for their enormous contributions in their specialized domains and urged them to collaborate to fortify worker solidarity for the nation's advancement.
