German Firm Wins Ghana TV Contract

MUNICH -- Rohde & Schwarz has been commissioned to set up a nationwide TV and sound broadcasting network in Ghana. In its role as consortium leader, Rohde & Schwarz will work with T-Systems International GmbH to set up state-of-the-art transmitter systems including antennas and satellite feeds at a total of 31 sites.

The German Federal Government supports the order, which is worth 17.4 million euros, with a Hermes export credit guaranty. The transmitter systems will be delivered by the end of July. The entire broadcasting network project will be completed in April 2005. Well over 90% of the Ghanaian population will then have access to sound broadcasting and TV.

With the new broadcasting network, Ghana is evolving into an information society. This will benefit not only big cities and highly populated areas but also people in remote areas, who will receive broadcasting and TV for the first time. Apart from entertainment programs, various channels will broadcast information and education programs specifically tailored to the needs of the rural population.

FM transmitters of the R&S SR600 and R&S SR500 families plus liquid-cooled TV transmitters of the R&S NM7000 family will be used in Ghana. Moreover, input equipment racks will be supplied that have been developed and manufactured to customer specifications by Rohde & Schwarz FTK GmbH. These racks allow continuous signal quality monitoring at different sites and switching between different signal sources. T&M equipment from Rohde & Schwarz will also be supplied as part of this project.
